Tenerife is the biggest of the Canary Islands and perhaps one of the last European paradise isles. The capital city of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Tenerife has traditional rural towns, luxuriant forests, exotic fauna and flora, deserts, mountains, stunning beaches and coastlines, hillside villages and extremely unusual landscapes shaped from the twisted lava-rock of Mount Teide, the highest point of all Spain, with 3,718 m (12,198 ft).
REASONS TO GO
The National Park of the Cañadas of Tenerife
The long twisting mountain roads with breathtaking sceneries
A great location for hiking and scuba diving lovers
ORIENTATION
Tenerife occupies a central position between the other Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, La Gomera and La Palma. The island is 300 km (186 mi) away from the African coast, and around 1.000 km (621 mi) from the Iberian Peninsula.
On the north area of the island you will see splendid vegetation, and more energetic local culture. The northern coast of Tenerife is surrounded by sharp cliffs, but the southern part of the island turns into one of the few regions of level coastal plain in the volcanic islands of the archipelago.
BEST TIME TO GO
Tenerife is branded worldwide as the "Island of Eternal Spring" (Isla de la Eterna Primavera). The island has a warm climate year-round with an average of 20º - 22ºC in the winter and 26º - 28ºC in the summer.
HOW TO GET THERE
Tenerife has two airports, Tenerife South (Reina Sofia) near Los Cristianos and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) by La Laguna. Buses run from both airports to the other villages.
There are also ferries connecting Tenerife with the Gran Canaria and La Gomera.
TRAVELLING AROUND
A rent a car is the best choice for discovering the isolated wilderness regions. TITSA buses have a good service that covers most of the island.
