Color is the first of Luang Prabang's virtues to greet travelers. Gardens full of trees filled with scarlet flowers, the ocher robes of hundreds of novice monks, and the glittering gold of the monasteries. The aroma of fresh coffee, the bustling activity on the river, markets. And then the broader aesthetics begin to unfold. Surrounded by mountains and situated 700m above sea level at the confluence of the Nam Khan (Khan River) and the Mekong River, Luang Prabang is the biggest tourist attraction of Laos. The provincial French architecture and the multi-ethnic character of its inhabitants captivates even the most discerning of travelers, and the quiet benevolence of the city and its residents is an irresistible appeal to stay a few more days.
The city is World Heritage of Unesco, which means that trucks and buses are banned from the city center. Most of the activity in the streets consists of bicycles or motorcycles, but most walk the same walk. Although the city has many visitors, there is a nightlife destination, and the curfew of the night 11:30 mutes the city and retains its traditional layout.

The city of Luang Prabang, 140 km from the capital, summarizes in a unique way the friendly people and the beauty of the country. Considered Cultural Heritage, the town of 16,000 inhabitants boasted, until 1975, the title of real capital.
Today still retains 32 of the 66 temples or wats (the local language), existing before the French colonization.
Luang Prabang, situated between the Mekong and Khan rivers, is the most beautiful city in Laos, with few concessions to the style of the twentieth century. The rush hour boil down off of students in schools, on their bikes, mingling with the small traffic from tuk-tuks - motorized adapted to receive a small body and used to transport passengers.
WHEN TO GO
The best time to visit the country is between December and April, when the weather is dry and the temperatures average around 30ºC (November is the best month). Avoid March and April, when temperatures are very high and the tribes of the mountains clean the fields to cultivate. However, the celebrations of Pi Mai Lao, the Lao New Year (lasting three days), beginning in mid-April, and usually develop into street parties soaked. Often the time being unpleasant during the monsoon from May to September. The monsoon (period of winds) begins in Luang Prabang, where, in summer, runs a boat racing festival in the Nam Khan River.
HOW TO GET THERE
You can get in Laos bus, boat or plane, but the latter will be the most suitable transport. Most travelers arriving from Thailand, whether on Thai Airways (www.thaiair.com), Bangkok Airways (www.bangkokair.com) or Lao Airways, the Wattay- International Airport Vientiane or Luang Prabang International Airport, respectively. The Wattay airport, the country's main entry point, you can take a taxi to Vientiane for less than 4 euros.
Visas for tourists are purchased on arrival and prices range: about 27 euros per visa (if you reach the end-of-week or during the holidays, the government charges an extra 1 euro), one euro for photo scanning the passport.
GETTING AROUND
Considered for a safe journey, Lao Aviation (with its fleet of Chinese aircraft, in line with Russian Antonov) connects almost all major cities by relatively low prices.

You can also take boat tours along the Mekong River. Contact Asian Oasis (www.asian-oasis.com). Within cities, take a taxi or a "jumbo", a motorcycle that is the Lao version of the tuk-tuk. In major urban cities, you can also rent a bike or a motorcycle.
Luang Prabang there are buses to Vientiane ($ 9, 11 hours, five to eight calls a day, air-con, $ 10, 11 hours, twice a day) from the southern bus terminal leave. The same bus to Vang Vieng ($ 7.50, six to seven hours, air conditioning). Buses with air conditioning go out between 6:30 AM and 9 AM.

While in Luang Prabang a good option is to rent a scooter for about 5 euros a day.
