Continuing along the riverside, you arrive to the most paradigmatic neighborhood related to the Descobrimentos Era: Belém. It was from here that the ships of the navigator Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India and around this area you can breath the grandeur of the once empire.
Today it is a spacious area with large gardens and towering monuments, such as the Jeronimos Monastery, the Monument of the Discoveries, Belém Tower, as well as the Belém Cultural Centre and Rua Vieira Porto.
If you come to this part of town, be sure to taste the famous pastel de Belém.
