In this square in the center of Lisbon, before the great earthquake of 1755, was located the All Saints Hospital. After the earthquake, and all the conversion carried out by the Minister of the Kingdom of D. Joseph I, Marquis of Pombal, this square became the main market in the city, and has even been a covered market built in 1885, which later, in 50 years, was demolished.
Situated between Martim Moniz and Rossio Square, here was the great festival of the popular saints, which now animates the whole city in June.
The square is surrounded by buildings that house now hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants with nice terraces.
In the center is the statue of King John I, the work of Leopoldo de Almeida, built in 1971, in bronze.
