This is the oldest church in Alicante and was built in the gothic style between the 14th and 16th centuries over the ruins of what was once the main mosque during the Moorish occupation.
Standing in a square below the Santa Barbara Castle, the Santa Maria Basilica dates back to the 14th Century when it was built on the site of a former mosque. The facade is 18th Century baroque. Many changes have taken place over the centuries and the church has a 16th Century font, a mid 17th Century Valencian baroque organ and an 18th Century Rococo high altar. There are also some fine paintings.
