Gran Canal

for free

It is the city's most important means of communication.

Almost 400 metres in length and 30-70 metres in width, it divides the historic district in two parts. Travelling across it are the Venetian taxis and buses; the gondolas and the vaporetti. In the waves you can appreciate the most sublime palaces as you look down the canal.

The palaces range in construction from medieval times to the 18th century.
