Royal Mile

for free

In the centre of the Old Town you’ll find the Royal Mile, the city’s most historical street. The Royal Mile is a succession of streets which form the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland.

In the 16th century the king used it to travel between his castle and his palace. All along the street you can see grand buildings and period residences.

Old Edinburgh's Royal Mile — a dense tangle of historic buildings, quaint shops and fun museums — winds its way downhill from the medieval castle to Holyrood Palace.
