The National Theater of S. João was constructed in the same place where long ago one another lyric theater with the same name existed. The Theater of S. João was inaugurated with the Comedy " the Vivandeira" the 13 of May of 1798, with intention to designate the birthday of the Prince regent. In April of 1908 a fire completely destroyed it. Its reconstruction had beginning in 1911 and finished in 1918. The new building has a robust aspect but no style definition. Today, the building is one of the main buildings of the city and an important place of cultural events of the city.
