The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art.

Founded at the end of the 19th century collects antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value.

Founded in 1975, this museum represents the museum of the Greek Armed Forces.

Its purpose is the exhibition of weapon artifacts and the relevant research in the history of war. It covers the history of war in all ages. The museums' collections include the collection of the Greek Army, with artifacts from other civilizations such as Ancient China and Ancient Japan.

Hellenic State decided to found the War Museum, wishing to honor all those who fought for our country and its freedom.

Its various activities include the publication of books, the establishment and maintenance of monuments and memorials and the aid to services and agencies all over Greece.

The Museum’s exhibition areas are distributed over four levels (floors) and present images of Greek history from antiquity to the present.

Established in 1930 , this building houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to the modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art, hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop.

The Byzantine and Christian Museum was founded in 1914. From 1930 on it has been housed in the "Ilisia" mansion, which belonged to the Duchess of Placentia and was built in 1848 by the architect Stamatis Kleanthes. It was transformed into a museum by the architect Aristotle Zachos. Today an addition is being made and a large extension with basement and buildings in part above ground. The architectural design is by Manos Perrakis.
The Byzantine and Christian Museum, which is based in Athens, is one of Greece’s national museums. Its areas of competency are centred on – but not limited to – religious artefacts of the Early Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, post-Byzantine and later periods which it exhibits, but also acquires, receives, preserves, conserves, records, documents, researches, studies, publishes and raises awareness of.

The museum has over 25,000 artefacts in its possession. The artefacts date from between the 3rd and 20th century AD, and their provenance encompasses the entire Greek world, as well as regions in which Hellenism flourished. The size and range of the collections and value of the exhibits makes the Museum a veritable treasury of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and culture.

The Epigraphical Museum is unique in Greece and the largest of its kind in the world. It safeguards 13,510, mostly Greek, inscriptions, which cover the period from early historical times to the Late Roman period, primarily in Greece.

Four of its rooms are accessible to visitors, while the rest is reserved for researchers. A full photographic archive of the collection is being assembled for future visitors.

This ‘library of stones’ houses an important collection of Greek inscriptions detailing official records, including lists of war dead, tribute lists showing annual payments by Athens’ allies, and the decree ordering the evacuation of Athens before the 480 BC Persian invasion.

Frissiras Museum is a contemporary painting museum in Plaka Athens, Greece. It was founded and endowed by Vlassis Frissiras, an art-collecting lawyer. Its permanent collection consists of 3000 paintings and sculptures by Greek and other European artists on the subject of the human form.

Frissiras Museum houses a rich collection dedicated to the European human centered painting with creations of famous artists since 1950 until today (like Jean Roustin, Chronis Botsoglou, Andrea Martinelli, Valerio Adami and others) and also relevant publications and posters.

Gounaropoulos Museum was founded in 1979 and was housed in the atelier of the famous Greek painter George Gounaropoulos (1890-1977), in the Zografou area of Athens.

TThis museum contains 40 oil paintings and drawings, the artists’ personal belongings and archive, serving as Art and Culture Center, hosting art exhibitions, lectures and cultural events. In the old atelier of the painter (which has been listed by the Greek State as conservation-worthy property) are exhibited his works, including oil paintings, drawings done in crayon and fusain, studies and also personal items.

The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC.

Founded in 1986, on the galleries of the MCA the visitor can see three major subjects: Cycladic Art( 3200-2000 BC), Ancient Greek Art (2000 BC -395 AD) and Ancient Cypriot Art (3900 BC-6th AD).

Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum was created by the renowned Greek jewellery designer Ilias Lalounis devoted to the art of jewelry and the decorative arts.

It is comprised by 24 collections of a total of over 4,000 jewels and small ornaments dedicated to the history and art of jewellery making.

The Museum’s permanent collection includes over 4000 pieces of jewelry and micro sculptures from over 50 collections designed by the museum’s founder, Ilias Lalaounis, between 1940 and 2000.

The Municipal Gallery of Athens is housed in a neoclassical building.

Built in 1874, this place houses a rich collection of nearly 3,000 works from leading 19th- and 20th-century Greek artists.

The Îœuseum of Greek Folk Art is the central state ethnographic museum under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Its rich collections contain representative examples of every branch of Greek folk art : Embroidery, Weaving, Regional Costumes, Masquerades, Shadow Theatre, Silverware, Metalware, Pottery, Woodcarving , Folk Painting (works of Theophilos Hatzimichail), Stone carving.

The permanent exhibition gives prominence to the features that formed the cultural identity of modern Greeks in the period from the 17th up to 20th c.

The Museum of Popular Music Instruments is a museum and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology in the Lassanis Mansion, Plaka, Athens, Greece.

It has about 600 Greek musical instruments from the last 300 years and has as many more in store.

The permanent exhibition is spread over three floors and divided into four sections. The instruments are classified according to the material, by the vibrations of which the sound.

The permanent collection includes:lyres,flogheras,defia,gaides,koudounia,laghouta,bouzoukia,souravlia,zournades, lalitsas, toubelekia and cretan lyras

The Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum was established in 1976 following the donation to the Greek state of the collection of this name.

Founded in 1976, it comprises the private collection of Paul and Alexandra Kanellopoulos which was donated to the Greek state. It is housed in the neoclassical mansion of the Michalea family, situated on the north slope of the Acropolis and built in 1864.

The mansion was purchased by the Greek state in the 1960s-70's and was restored to permanently house the collection.

The items of the collection include clay and stone vases and figurines, busts, jewellery, weapons, coins and inscriptions, ranging from 3000-1200 BC to the 18th and 19th centuries AD.

This museum presents the modern history of Athens, Europe’s oldest and most famous city, since it became the capital of the newly founded Hellenic State in 1834 under the first royal couple, Otto and Amalia.

Several other collections and a series of typical late 19th century- early 20th century sitting and living rooms of the Athenian aristocracy complete the different aspects of our city offered by the Museum.

It houses a collection of a variety of Athens-related items collected by art collector Lambros Eutaxias (1905-1996). It includes antiquities, Byzantine art, sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs and metal, glass and textile works. Also it includes furniture arranged in typical living rooms of the Athenian aristocracy of the 19th century.

The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens.

The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.

The museum was founded in 2003,and it opened to the public on June 20, 2009.

Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.The Organisation for the Construction of the new museum is chaired by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Professor Emeritus of Archaeology, Dimitrios Pandermalis.

Today, the new Acropolis Museum has a total area of 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, ten times more than that of the old museum on the Hill of the Acropolis.

The new Museum offers all the amenities expected in an international museum of the 21st century.

Technopolis (Gazi) is an industrial museum and a major cultural venue of the City of Athens, Greece, in the neighborhood of Gazi


It is dedicated to the memory of the great Greek composer Manos Hatzidakis, which is why it is also known as "Gazi Technopolis Manos Hatzidakis".[1] It has been in operation since 1999 and is situated in the city's former gasworks which were founded in 1857, occupying an area of about 30.000 m2. Numerous exhibitions, seminars, music concerts and other cultural activities take place in the grounds. Eight of the buildings of the compound bear the names of famous Greek poets: Andreas Embirikos, Angelos Sikelianos, Yannis Ritsos, Kostis Palamas, Takis Papatsonis, Constantine Cavafis and Kostas Varnalis. On the second floor of the Angelos Sikelianos building is a museum dedicated to the renowned opera singer Maria Callas.

The National Art Gallery and Alexander Soutzos Museumwas created for Greek and European art from the 14th century to the 20th century.

The gallery exhibitions are mainly focused on post-Byzantine Greek Art. The gallery owns and exhibits also an extensive collection of European artists. Particularly valuable, is the collection of paintings from the Renaissance.
