São Vicente is a small volcanic island that belongs to the group of the islands of Barlavento, being located between Santo Antão, on the West, and Santa Luzia, on the East.
Its scenery is very arid, with rare vegetation, and just a limited number of birds found in the island are migrating. The island is mostly plain, but has however, the great Monte Verde, 774 meters high.
This island has a beautiful irregular coastline, with amazing transparent and war waters and stunning beaches.

ORIENTATION
São Vicente is perfect for the practice of water sports; Baía de S. Pedro is great for surfing and windsurfing, and the quiet waters of the natural lagoon of Baáa das Gatas are superb for swimming. It´s worth visiting the city of Mindelo for its culture and energy, with life music in the streets and clubs, and with a good offer of cultural events.
The two most popular festivities: Carnival (February) and Baía das Gatas Music Festival of Cape Verde (August) take place in São Vicente.
BEST TIME TO GO
The climate is mostly tropical and dry, with the temperature around 24ºC (75 ºF) during all year. The ocean water temperature varies between 22 ºC (72 ºF) and 25 ºC (77 ºF). From November to July, the weather is mainly dry and windy, and from August to October is the "rainy season".
HOW TO GET THERE
The airport of São Vicente is located in the South of the island, 1 km away from São Pedro, and 10 km away from the city of Mindelo.
Regular TACV domestic flights are scheduled from/to Sal, Santiago and São Nicolau.
Ferry boats connect S. Vicente with some islands of the archipelago, anchoring in the port of Mindelo, Porto Grande.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Buses run in the city of Mindelo and neighbouring areas and in July and August, they also go to Baía das Gatas. There are as well public transports to São Pedro. To better explore the island and places the buses don´t reach, the best is to take a taxi.
Buses and taxis are easy to find in the square located on the West of the Presidential Palace (Palácio Presidencial).
