Sal is the island of Cape Verde where tourism is most developed. It is part of the northern group of islands – Barlavento and one of the three sandy eastern islands (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) of the archipelago, with long sandy beaches and wide plains.

ORIENTATION

The most important town for tourists visiting Sal is Santa Maria which is at the southern end of the island. There you will find gorgeous beaches, many restaurants, bars and hotels and a peaceful atmosphere. The principal attractions are the pier and the town square. The larger hotels and new resorts are at the western end, where you will also find the renowned dunes and beach of Ponta Preta. Pedra de Lume is a beautiful small picturesque fishing village, close to a modern golf resort and marina and to the old Salinas.

 

 

BEST TIME TO GO

Sal Island has sunshine almost all the year round and a very pleasant weather. Winds mainly blow from the northeast. The 'rainy season' is from August to mid-October, although rainfall is still low. In September and October the sea water temperatures rise sometimes to the 25ºC.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

The International airport Amílcar Cabral in the island of Sal has many connections to the rest of the world and from other Cape Verde islands.

 

TRAVELLING AROUND

There are some public transports available with regular schedules to/from the two most important villages.

The best way to explore the island is by renting a car. To visit the other islands you can choose between travelling by ferry or plane.
