Serengeti National Park is a large conservation area situated in the northern Tanzania. The park extends over into neighbouring Kenya where it's known as the Masai Mara.
Serengeti is especially famous for the migration, where over a million wildebeest and about 200.000 zebras move from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains, every October and November, and then spin west and north after the long rains in April, May and June.
REASONS TO GO
One of the most important and well known wildlife reserves in the world
Great range of choice for safari accommodation
Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration
BEST TIME TO GO
The short rains are concentrated in November/December and the long and Apart from the long rains months of April and May, every time is a perfect time to be on Safari in Northern Tanzania.
The Serengeti falls into the classic bimodal rain pattern of East Africa. The short rains are concentrated in November/December, the long and heavier rains in March - May. Mean monthly maximum temperatures are relatively uniform throughout the year being constant around 27 to 28 degrees centigrade (or 75 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit) at Seronera. At Ngorongoro Crater the nights can be very chilly due to altitude.
Any time other than during the long rains in April and May is a perfect time to be on Safari in Northern Tanzania. Game viewing and the number of other tourists varies widely according to the seasonal concentrations of wildlife . Most Safari operators will adjust their itineraries accordingly.
HOW TO GET THERE
If you're setting up a safari in Northern Tanzania, the best airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport, near Arusha. Getting by car to Serengeti from Arusha takes around eight hours.
There are also internal flights by small aircrafts from Arusha to the Seronera Airstrip in the heart of Serengeti or to Kirawira Airstrip in the Western Corridor.
Internal flights by small aircrafts from Arusha to the Seronera Airstrip in the heart of Serengeti or to Kirawira Airstrip in the Western Corridor cost 135 US$ per person one way. The cost of charter flights varies widely. Limit your baggage to 10 - 15 kg (25 - 30 pounds) per person. It is advisable to carry your luggage in soft bags rather than hard sided suitcases.
If you're heading to the south and west of Tanzania, most itineraries will start in Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania to Kenya by Land
If you wish to combine a Tanzania safari with a Kenyan safari, there are several border crossings available. Buses regularly go from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam, Nairobi to Dar es Salaam, Nairobi to Arusha, and Voi to Moshi. If you're on a tour that combines the two countries, transport will be included and usually includes a 5 hours bus drive from Nairobi to Arusha.
TRAVELLING AROUND
In Tanzania, your safaris usually take place in 4WD vehicles. Some lodges in private reserves offer open-sided vehicles and enjoy specific privileges such as off-road driving and night drives - activities that are not allowed in the public areas of the Serengeti.
The Serengeti does not recommend budget self-driving. Being guided by professionals who know the area and the animals well is the best and safest form of travelling.
You can also enjoy a hot air balloon safari in the Serengeti and Selous National Parks.
