Vientiane is the capital of Laos, located in the western part of the country, by the river Mekong and bordering Thailand. This city has a delightfully peaceful atmosphere, with its many Temples, museums and gardens.

ORIENTATION
Vientiane is to be found on the north-eastern bank of the Mekong River. The main roads run parallel to the river. The central district, Chanthabuli, is the place where most government offices, hotels and restaurants are located. The largest boulevard, Thanon Lane Xang, takes you in the direction of the Victory Gate, towards the principal religious monument in Laos, That Luang Stupa.
The best time to visit the country is between December and April, when the weather is hot and dry.
Vientiane's Wattay Airport is 4 km west of the city.
Many hotels offer a pickup service from the airport, or you can take a tuk tuk, a jumbo or a taxi.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The city centre is easy and pleasant to walk around on foot. To visit Pha That Luang you can hire a bicycle or take a tuk tuk or a taxi.
