Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and its largest city, with over 11 million inhabitants. Bangkok is an amazing cosmopolitan city with a frenetic pace.
Bangkok has an intriguing blend of traditional East and modern West: Old buildings next to colourful Temples, charming gardens, modern hotels and giant skyscrapers.
REASONS TO GO
The Bangkok skyline.
The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun Temples.
Great street food.
ORIENTATION
Most of what Bangkok has to offer is located east of the Chao Phraya River, starting with artificial island of Rattankosin (Old City), where you'll find the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the National Museum.
Further south are the foreigner's quarters: Chinatown with its thin streets and small shops, Little India, and the former European enclaves Bangrak and Sathorn, with commercial buildings, elegant hotels and a vibrant nightlife.
The Sukhumvit area is the most cosmopolitan in the city, with exclusive shops, restaurants and entertainment.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit is between November and March, during the dry season.
HOW TO GET THERE
Bangkok International Airport is located 30km (19 miles) east of the city centre.
There are taxis and Airport Express buses operating four different routes into the city.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Most people usually take a taxi or a tuk tuk to move around the city.
River taxis and ferries on Chao Praya River are also a quick way to get from one neighbourhood to the next.
There are also Sky Train and subway routes travelling around Sukhumvit and Silom.
