Salzburg, Mozart’s birth town, is a city located in the centre of Austria, close to the Bavarian border with around 150.000 inhabitants.
After World War II, Salzburg has been able to recover and preserve elegantly the historical centre. In 1997, it’s "Old Town", with its world well-known baroque architecture was considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.
Salzburg is a "pleasant little town" that is "one of the truly European cities still left." Most famous as the hometown of Mozart (and those other musical geniuses, the Von Trapps), Salzburg will "transport you back in time." It's the perfect place for "folks who still care about culture and history."
A chic city in the Alps - very cosmopolitan and trendy, with a medieval and rococo architecture
Salzburg is a very important centre for the modern arts, with a fine museum and a big music festival (Salzburg Festival). And of course we have to mention the Sound of Music movie that showed this city to the world.
The prodigious Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here
Salzburg Alstsadt, the old town, is placed by the south bank of river Salzach. This is the area where you will find most attractions and baroque monuments.
However, in the north bank of the river, there are some of the best theatres, like Landestheater. The famous Schloss Hellbrunn is located in the south of the city.
Salzburg is one of the coldest cities of Austria. Going in summer is perfect to go to the Salzburg Festival and in winter is worth it for the ski, the Christmas markets and songs.
Salzburg W.A. Mozart International Airport (www.salzburg-airport.com) is located 3 km form the city centre. Connection with the city is provided by a trolley bus, in 20 minutes. A taxi ride costs around 13 €.
The most important attractions are in the Altstadt (old town) and you can visit all easily by foot. To cross the river to the other side of town, we recommend taking a bus or taxi.
Another good way of travelling around is by bike. Salzburg has more than 100km of bike paths. There are beautiful bike paths on both sides of the river.
