In Germany, Cologne is the oldest big town. It is positioned on the river Rhein in North Rhine-Westphalia and is the fourth largest city in Germany with about a million inhabitants. It is an important media, tourism and business hotspots.
Since its conclusion in 1880, Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) is the spiritual and geographical centre of the city and is the most famous attraction. Its size is emphasized by two enormous towers that dominate the city panorama.
We can find in this city many roman traces such as the 12 Romanesque Churches, the famous Romano-Germanic Museum and also an Aqueduct.

ORIENTATION
The Cologne city map still shows in its disposition the Roman influence.
BEST TIME TO GO
Cologne is really worth visiting during some special events, such as the Carnival of Superlatives: The number 11 symbolises tomfoolery. The German word for 11 – elf – also stands for equality, liberty and fraternity. Consequently Cologne's alleged "Fifth Season" starts every year on the 11th day of the 11th month at exactly 11:11 a.m.
Concerning the weather, Cologne has one of the warmest winters in Germany, but of course travellers can expect the hottest time in July and the coldest in February.
HOW TO GET THERE
Cologne Bonn Airport handles international and domestic flights. The airport is approximately 15 minutes by S-Bahn (local train) to the centre of Cologne. S-Bahn fare is currently €2.30 one-way. A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs around €30.
Cologne is served by two major train stations - Köln Hauptbahnhof and Köln-Deutz.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Cologne has a very good subway/tram and bus network "KVB" (Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe). One and three day-passes are available. The tickets are valid for subway, tram and regional train within the VRS-network. As the city centre is not too big, cycling or walking are also excellent options to get around.
