Dortmund, a city located in the heart of Ruhr, is a good example of how it is possible to triumph over the economic and structural changes that took place in that region. Not long ago this city was a centre for heavy industries, but today has become a top location in North-Rhine Westphalia for information technology, micro systems technology and logistics and of course, scientific research.

REASONS TO GO

Industrial Tourism – several monuments showing off the city’s tradition in the coal and steel sector

The Christmas Market in Dortmund is one of the largest in Germany and host of the largest Christmas 'tree' in the world (in fact a collection of many smaller trees). It is open from late November.

The National Rosarium in the Westfalenpark which has a collection of more than 3000 rose species.

ORIENTATION

The city centre still maintains the outline of the medieval city. A ring road marks the previous city wall, and the Westen-/Ostenhellweg, part of a medieval salt trading route, is still the main (pedestrian) street, crossing the city centre.

The Ruhr River flows south of the city, and the small river Escher flows through the municipal area. The Dortmund-Ems Canal also terminates in the Dortmund Port, which is the largest European canal port, and links Dortmund to the North Sea.

BEST TIME TO GO

Mild winters and relatively cool summers are characteristic for the climate in the Dortmund region. In winter, the Christmas Market is worth the visit.

HOW TO GET THERE

Dortmund airport is located 13 km (8 miles) east of the city centre and is home of several low-cost airlines. There is no direct train or tram connection to the airport, however there are shuttle busses between the airport and Dortmund central station and Holzwickede Station.

Taxi currently costs around 25 Euros to the City Centre and takes about 20 minutes.

TRAVELLING AROUND

From Dortmund's central station (Dortmund Hauptbahnhof) you can easily get transport into the centre or any suburb via subway and bus. The city has an extensive Stadtbahn (city railway), streetcar and bus system.
