Frankfurt is the business, financial and transportation centre of Germany. The ultramodern skyline and the biggest German airport are two important characteristics of this city.  Located on the river Main, Frankfurt is home of the European Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange. It is also hometown of the famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

During World War II, in 1944, bombing has almost destroyed the entire city. Frankfurt was rebuilt in the following decades. Frankfurt´s oldest area, Altstadt, has buildings both from medieval times and 18th century, contrasting with the new part, full with Skyscrapers and contemporary museums.

REASONS TO GO

Frankfurt is a cosmopolitan city in the centre of Europe, where different people, cultures and arts meet and live along.

Its skyline is unique. The high-rises are concentrated in a rather small downtown area, giving Frankfurt the looks of a metropolis.

Try the typical sausages and the local cider "apfelwein".

ORIENTATION

Frankfurt belongs to the second biggest German region. The city has over 670.000 inhabitants and around 5 million in the metropolitan area. The city has many skyscrapers and modern constructions, such as the Commerzbank Tower and the MesseTurm, and at the same time there are also medieval neighbourhoods, inviting parks perfect for a picnic and surprisingly healthy outdoor living.

Across the other side of the Main, along its bank there is a unique set of 13 museums, holding the most varied art expositions.

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit Frankfurt would be from late spring to early autumn. The summers tend to be sunny and warm around 25º C (77º F). The winters can be cold and rainy (usually not lower than -10º C/14º F).

HOW TO GET THERE

Frankfurt has excellent connectivity between railways, airlines and motorways. Reaching and leaving Frankfurt is easy. The Airport Frankfurt Main is located twelve kilometres from the city centre. It is the second largest airport in Europe. Local trains conveniently connect the airport with the city´s main railway station.

The Hahn Airport which also serves Frankfurt is located 110 kilometres to the west of the city. Buses depart from the main terminal and tickets cost Euro 12.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The best way to travel around Frankfurt is taking the subway system (U-Bahn), tram and bus. For connections to the suburbs use the S-Bahn. You can get individual, group, day and week tickets. To go to the suburbs or airport use the S-Bahn. All lines come together in a tunnel (Citytunnel) in central Frankfurt (beside line S7, which ends at Central Station).

Consider buying a Frankfurt Card. It allows unlimited travel on Frankfurt's public transport system (including airport) and discounts in many museums. The Frankfurt Card is available as a one day and two day ticket, and for a single person or a group of up to five (1 person 1 day, Euro 8.70; group 1 day, Euro 15.00).
