The island of Corfu is located on the Greek West coast, enjoying a mild Mediterranean climate, excellent beaches and green mountains. Olive trees and wine are the most important cultivations, even though Corfu's tourism now provides the most revenue. Corfu town has mostly French and Venetian architecture. ORIENTATION

Corfu is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands and lies at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, in front of Albania. The island is the second biggest of the Ionians, with an area of 593 sq. km and 216 km. 

In Corfu it is amazing to see the heritage of a rich past, where Greek, Roman, Venetian and French occupations have left their marks.

One of its most interesting places to visit is Liston, in the centre of Corfu Town and whose arches cover several bars and cafes. Across from Liston is the beautiful Spaniada, a park that is often used for Cricket matches.

From Liston, we suggest a walk to the Old Fortress. Next to the Spaniada is the Palace of Sts. Michael and George, previously the property of the Greek royal family and now the Museum of Asian Arts. Approximately 12 kilometres from Corfu town, in the region of Gastouri, is the Achillion Palace.

The island of Corfu is famous for its sandy and clear water beaches. Some of the best Corfu beaches and resorts are:

Paleokastritsa, Kontogialos, Dassia, Kassiopi,  Myrtiotissa,  San Stefano, Agios Georgios Pagon, Nissaki, Arillas,  Acharavi, Sidari, Kavos, Ipsos, Barbati, Glyfada.

BEST TIME TO GO

The climate in Corfu is warm Mediterranean. The summer is warm and the winter is mild. Rain appears mainly between November and March.

Spring here is inspiring and offers visitors the advantage of enjoying the wealth of vegetation and colours, combined with high-taste tourism. 

Summer is the most popular season for Corfu, but of course, very crowded. July and September are good months to visit the island. You can still enjoy the beach, in more peaceful conditions and also get to know the rest of the island with pleasant weather all the time.

HOW TO GET THERE

By air

To get to Corfu using scheduled flights you can fly to Athens and then get an internal flight from Athens to Corfu.

Corfu "Ioannis Kapodistrias" airport is located 3km (1.8 miles) to the south of the city.

By boat

There are also ferries services connecting some Italian cities like Venice, Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Triest to Igoumenitsa in Patra (Greece). See the timetables and prices at www.greekferries.gr or www.ferries.gr. From Igoumenitsa you must take the Ferry-Boat to Corfu Town or Lefkimi.

By bus

There are daily departures from Athens Bus terminal (KTEL) to Corfu. Tickets are about 30 Euros and should be bought in advance. The distance from Athens to Igoumenitsa is about 500 km and the trip lasts 7-8 hours.

TRAVELLING AROUND

There are many ways to travel around the Island. You can hire a car; take a local bus or taxi. You can also rent a speed boat and with such stunning views, cool air, and wonderful sensations, renting a motor boat can be the experience of your vacation (no license required).
