Mikonos is a Greek island located in the centre of the Aegean Sea, 150 kilometres east of Athens and belonging to the Cyclades islands.
Although it is the most renowned of this group it is actually the smallest one, with an area of only 90 square kilometres. Its rocky territory rises from the sea to form gentle hills and small valleys with the two highest points. The island is composed essentially of granite, which in some areas originates interesting forms through the erosive action of the wind, sea and sun.
Despite its small area, Mykonos has over twenty accessible sandy beaches that made the island so famous. The main town or "Hora" is located on the west coast of the island.
The essence of the Greek islands: white villages, countless tiny chapels, arid and rocky landscapes, the turquoise Aegean, and astonishing beaches.
Mykonos and Santorini are the pearls of the Cyclades Islands, with prestigious hotels and trendy restaurants and clubs. Some of the other islands of the group: Paros, Sifnos and Naxos are the most crowded while Serifos, Milos and Andros are the less known ones.
The small and sacred Delos
Going in August unless you are travelling for nightlife only or you don´t mind the crowds.
ORIENTATION
The Cyclades are a combination of stone, sunlight and gleaming sea, laying to the east of the Peloponnese and south-east of the coast of Attica; they extend as far as Samos and Ikaria to the east, and are delimited to the south by the Cretan Sea.
BEST TIME TO GO
In July and August these islands are generally overcrowded. From the end of July and during August the strong winds called meltemia can interrupt many ferries connections and close some beaches.
September and first weeks of October are the best time to go. There will be less tourists and the weather is still great.
Between October and May, the weather won´t be so warm, many services close and the ferry connections are reduced.
AIR
Mykonos can be reached from most international airports via Athens airport "Eleftherios Venizelos". Then you have to catch a direct flight to Mykonos. Nearly all international flights arriving in Greece during summer time allow adequate time for making the connecting flight to Mykonos, but because local flights have a minimum seating capacity, you have to book these flights early.
There are daily flight connections with Athens - West Terminal, 50 minutes- and several with Rhodes, Santorini and Crete (Heraklion).
BOAT
A good way to travel from Athens and also between the islands is by ferry (www.gtp.gr, www.openseas.gr and www.ferries.gr). Some of the trips are quite long, but the landscape is so amazing that it is worth it.
For those participants having extra time, there is a regular ferry boat service to Mykonos from Piraeus offering a relaxing, pleasant journey. The cost is reasonable and takes an average of four to five hours.
Mykonos has also daily ferry connections with Rafina, Tinos, Syros, Paros, Naxos, Ios, Santorini and Andros. It is also frequently connected with Crete (Heraklion), Amorgos, Astypalaia, Kos, Rhodes and Samos. Less frequently is also connected with Ikaria, Serifos, Sifnos, Thessaloniki, Kalymnos, Nissyros, Tilos. Catamarans connect Mykonos to Piraeus, Tinos, Syros, Ios. There are also daily excursion boats to Delos.
