The CoBrA movement was founded by a group of European artists in 1948. Its name is derived from the names of the home cities of those artists – Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The artists wanted to break new ground, working spontaneously to create fantastic, expressive imagery. The movement was disbanded in 1951, but in its few years of life, it rejuvenated Dutch art. Nice building, and even better with the Van Gogh collection here during the renovation. The building is in a square shape so you can actually walk around. The church hall actually has sections from a church along with some modern lights and chairs where you can take a nice break and look onto the canals.
One half is currently part of the Van Gogh collection while that museum is being renovated. It is terrific. So well laid out. Showcases Van Gogh life and career.

The other half has works by many of the great artists, and they are connected to the st Petersburg hermitage collection, so they will share works of art.

The space is well organized, well done, clean, easy to navigate and a great experience for all. The cafe is also a nice place to have a coffee.

The special exhibit, for which the Ala Sur (Philipyleugel) has been completely renovated, offers a unique opportunity to see the most notable works from the Golden Age in a coherent context.

To get there, take the trams 2 and 5 and exit Hobbemastraat. At the Spiegelgracht stop, trams 6, 7, and 10 make a brief stop there, and lastly, trams 3, 12, 16, and 24 at the Museumplein stop.

The Stedelijk Museum or as the Dutch call it short Stedelijk (Municipal), strives to be one of the most innovative and interesting museums of modern art in the entire world.

After eight years of renovation and a construction of a new building next to the old one, the museum has reopened in September of 2012.

Moreover, while again, almost as at its first opening more than hundred years ago, the Stedelijk Museum drew controversies for its artistic choice, its policy and its financial decisions, the new museum is yet again interesting and fun to visit.

The Stedelijk´s main building was built in the years 1891-1895 at Paulus Potterstraat, at the short walking distance from the Rijksmuseum, to house the collection of art and antiques left to the city by Sophia Augusta Lopez Suasso de Bruyn. It was designed by A.W.Weissman, Amsterdam city architect at the time. It was a period when Dutch architecture was searching for its values in the historical past. Happily, the Stedelijk´s neo renaissance façade, decorated with several figurative sculptures, has been during the following renovations modernized and simplified, losing much of its rich decorum. People of Amsterdam like the old Weissman building, perhaps because of the contrast it creates with the modern art collection exhibited inside.

The house — and the one next door at number 265, which was later purchased by the museum — was built by Dirk van Delft in 1635. The canal-side facade dates from a renovation of 1739 when the rear annex was demolished and the taller one which now stands in its place was built.
