The city of Krakow is located in the southern Poland, spread over the banks of the Vistula River. The city as nearly one million inhabitants and is a recognized centre of science, arts and culture. The old city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage sites. ORIENTATION

 

Krakow is situated in the southern Poland, spreading over the Vistula River banks, in a valley at the bottom of the Carpathians. The city is about 300 km (190 miles) south from Warsaw and 100 km (60 miles) north to the Tatra Mountains.

 

The Old Town has some precious historic architecture buildings of Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic styles. In the Market Square stands the Gothic St. Mary's Basilica, built in the 14th century and home to the renowned wooden altar carved by Veit Stoss. Outside the city there are places worth visiting, like the incredible Wieliczka salt mine, the Tatra Mountains, the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz and the Ojcowski National Park which includes Pieskowa Skała Castle.

 

 

BEST TIME TO GO

Krakow has a temperate climate, with very cold winters and pleasant summers. Spring and autumn are probably the best seasons to visit the city.

 

 

HOW TO GET THERE

 

By plane

The John Paul II International Airport Krakow-Balice is 12 km from the city centre.

There is a train connection to the centre in about is 16 minutes. The train station is located 200 m from the terminal 1. To travel between the terminals and the station, you should use the free Shuttle Bus service.

 

Krakow Airport is also served by 3 regular bus lines: 208 and 292 and 902 (night line). Travelling time is approximately 35 min.

 

 

By Train

The city is connected by train from all larger cities in Poland and also with some cities in other countries, like Berlin, Budapest, Bucharest, Hamburg, Kiev, Lviv, Prague, Vienna and Żilin.

All trains stop at the Main Railway Station.


A taxi run to the city centre costs around 50 PLN.

 

TRAVELLING AROUND

The city centre is quite easy to visit walking, but anyway, there is a good public transport system, including trams and buses. Single, one-hour, daily, weekly and monthly tickets are available and can be bought from news agents and kiosks.

When travelling to neighbouring villages and to the airport you need an agglomeration ticket.


By Bicycle

It is easy to move around the centre by bicycle, as there are bike lanes everywhere, including on the 'Planty' park, around the Old Town.
