Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique. The city sits on the shore of the Indian Ocean, on the west side of Maputo Bay, at the mouth of the Tembe River.

Maputo was founded as a port town by the Portuguese, and is nowadays a very diverse and lively city, thanks to the influence of travellers and traders from Africa, Asia, and Europe.

REASONS TO GO

The Maputo Elephant Reserve

Diving in the Inhaca Island

The delicious gastronomy, with plenty of sea food

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit the city is from March to September.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Mavalane International Airport serves air traffic from all over Africa as well as some parts of Europe. From the airport it is quite easy to get into Maputo by taxi.

TRAVELLING AROUND

A very economical way to get around is by mini-bus or "Chapa". They work like small busses and have routes all across the city. There are two major bus terminals in the city: one at Baixa ("The lower part of the downtown"), and another one at Museu. The chapas are often packed beyond their capacity, and many passengers have to stand up. They are also often implicated in traffic accidents because of the dangerous driving. Pay attention to the pickpocketings.
