ORIENTATION
Though Bahamas consist of 700 tropical islands plus another 2.500 islets, there are some of them that have more tourist interest. The two most important population centres are the capital, Nassau (New Providence Island) and Freeport (Grand Bahama Island). The other inhabited Islands and islets are known as Family Islands.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The high season goes from late December to early April. From June to November, the rainy season, usually has short tropical storms and possible hurricanes. A good month to visit is May, when the weather is hot but not too humid and the crowds of the spring break are already gone.
HOW TO GET THERE
There are many airports in Bahamas, but the two largest ones are Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport, on New Providence, and Freeport, on Grand Bahama. From Pindling Airport taxi fare is $22 to Nassau and $28 to Paradise Island.
To travel between the islands, Bahamasair offers a complete network connecting most of the population centres.
Ferries are also a common means of transportation in The Bahamas. Most islands have a local ferry service to transfer travellers to and from neighbouring cays and harbours of the main island.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Travelling around in Paradise Island (Nassau), Grand Bahama Island and most of the Out Islands is quite easy. The various options of on-Island transportation consist of: rental cars, taxis, buses (called jitneys), scooters, bicycles and water taxis.
Driving in the Bahamas is British-style—on the left side of the road—which is why so many visitors leave the driving to others.
