ORIENTATION

160 miles (257 km) northwest of London, Manchester lies in a bowl-shaped land area, delimited to the north and east by the Pennine hills, a mountain range that runs the length of Northern England and to the south by the Cheshire Plain.

The city centre is on the east bank of the River Irwell, near its confluences with the Rivers Medlock and Irk. The River Mersey flows through the south of Manchester.

HOW TO GET THERE

By Plane

Manchester´s international airport (www.manchesterairport.co.uk) is 16 km south of the city. The airport has a combined railway and bus station, with departures to Manchester and the rest of the country.

The train to Manchester Piccadilly leaves every 15 minutes and takes 20 minutes. Airport buses to Manchester depart every 30 minutes. A taxi ride to the centre takes 30 minutes and costs about GBP 15.

 

By Train

TRAVELLING AROUND

Manchester city centre's many attractions are simply reached on foot, and walking is the best way to take in the architecture of the city.

Manchester has a free bus service operating three routes - green, orange and purple - around the city centre. Metroshuttle operates about every 10 minutes taking visitors from car parks, stations and tram stops around the city centre's main attractions.

Manchester's tram system, Metrolink runs through the city centre connecting major railway stations and tourist attractions.
