Bremen's state museum of art and cultural history, the Focke Museum offers a rewarding insight into 1,200 years of Bremen history.

The complex comprises the modern main building, the innovative display room for the residual collection and four historical buildings set in extensive gardens. Somewhat further afield is the Mühle Oberneuland windmill, which is also part of the museum.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the Focke Museum hosts a number of attractive temporary shows every year. It also provides a full programme of events for all ages, from talks and readings to themed guided tours and museum education events. Every summer, the Focke's Pavilion concert series draws large audiences to the museum gardens.

Catalogues and books accompanying the exhibitions, design pieces and other souvenirs are available from the museum shop. Café Focke's with its open-air courtyard serves refreshments and food.

The Kunsthalle art gallery re-opened in summer 2011 after two years of renovation and the addition of two new wings. This expansion has increased by almost a quarter the gallery's space for its collection and exhibitions. The prints and drawings collection, which includes more than 200,000 items, now has a modern counterpart and therefore double the space. Spacious studios and seminar rooms have provided additional space for the gallery's education programme, which caters for all ages.

Bremen's Kunstverein (art association) was founded in 1823 and still runs the Kunsthalle art gallery with its own funds. The collection offers an exceptional survey of European art and international modern art, spanning painting, sculpture, drawings, prints and media art from the Renaissance to the present day. A key focal point is the collection of French and German paintings from the 19th and 20th century, including important pieces by French Impressionists such as Monet, Manet and Cézanne, along with major paintings by Corinth, Liebermann, Beckmann and Modersohn-Becker. Universum Bremen turns science into a great adventure. In the ScienceCenter, the building that resembles a silver whale or a giant mussel, there are lots of interactive exhibits on the themes of mankind, Planet Earth and the cosmos. Here visitors can experiment and discover how obstacles affect a man-made waterway or experience a tornado as if it were for real. Little ones between the ages of three and eight will be in their element in the Milky Way area.

The outdoor EntdeckerPark discovery zone features interactive stations on the theme of movement. Young and young-at-heart visitors can test their collective sense of rhythm on the Earth xylophone or scale the 27-metre-high activity tower.
