Athens is the capital city of Greece with a population of 3.7 million inhabitants (metropolitan area). This city is full of meaning when we think of the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization.
Athens is one of the European capitals that has changed the most in the latest years. And even though it has become a modern metropolis, it still has many "town" characteristics.
Here ancient times meet the future, and the historic monuments form a classical background to a new and trendier Athens and it is exactly these great contrasts that make the city such a mesmerizing place to explore.
REASONS TO GO
The Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Olympic city: for the Olympic Games of 2004 the city has prepared a mega reconstruction: new hotels, transports and infrastructures
Natural Oasis: the national gardens, the local beaches and the islands
TO AVOID
Taking stones from the ancient buildings as souvenirs is absolutely forbidden and can get you arrested.
ORIENTATION
Athens extends over the central plain of Attica, and is bound by four large mountains: Aegaleo (to the west), Parnitha (to the north), Penteli (to the northeast) and Himettus (to the east). The Saronic Gulf borders the city in the southwest.
BEST TIME TO GO
The best months to visit the city are June and July. In August the inhabitants leave to the islands and many services close. Winter is quite chilly and rainy. Spring and autumn are lovely, with pleasant days, few tourists and good prices.
HOW TO GET THERE
Eleftherios Venizelos, the International Airport is about 30 kilometres southeast of Athens and it is accessible via Attiki Odos, a six-lane motorway constituting the Athens City Ring Road. A taxi to the city costs Euro 30-40. The airport bus to Syntagma takes less than 60 minutes and costs Euro 3.20. The Metro also connects to the centre and costs around Euro 8.
There are three bus itinereries dedicated to carry passengers to and from the airport:
There are two principal stations for KTEL, the national bus company. Terminal A, Odos Kifissou 100 (tel. 01/512-9233), off the road out of Athens toward Corinth, handles buses to and from the Peloponnese and parts of Northern Greece.
Terminal B, Odos Liossion 260 (tel. 01/831-7096), handles buses to and from Central Greece (including Delphi, Thebes, Evvia, and Meteora) and some destinations to the north and east of Athens.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The Metro stations are well worth seeing and the metro service is very good. The simple ticket allows you to travel on any means of transport, metro, buses, trains, trams and trolleybuses. You can also get a 24h or weekly ticket. Ferries (www.gtp.gr) leave out to the islands from the harbour in Pireus or from Rafina.
If you decide to take a taxi, get used to the idea of sharing it with some stranger. It´s very common in Athens, and in the end, is cheaper.
