Cinque Terre is the name given to a rugged piece of land in Italy (on the coast of the Riviera Ligure), located between Punta Mesco (near Levanto) and Cape Montenero (near Portovenere) and includes the municipalities of Monterosso, Vernazza, Riomaggiore with Manarola and Corniglia districts. They are one of the main attractions of the Riviera Ligure.
These locations (which, together with Porto Venere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetti Island were classified in 1997, a World Heritage by UNESCO), are characterized by mountainous terrain near the sea. Typical of this area are the terraces, built for their use as agricultural land, and be possible to enjoy the same, as far as possible, taking into account its large slope.
Everyone knows Cinque Terre for its stunning views and quaint seaside villages, but it's also home to the Sentiero Azzuro (or literally "Blue Trail") that connects the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare.
WHY GO
Five villages very photogenic, perched like pearls on a necklace along the most stunning coastline of Italy.
Walk along the famous and passionate Sentiero Azzurro and in the end, enjoy a great spaghetti al pesto.
AVOID
Go in July or August when temperatures are too high and tourists are everywhere.
ORIENTATION
The five villages that make up Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) are situated on slopes so steep that any road was never built. They are connected by a railway line, encrusted with stations at the exit of the tunnel. In this area of Cinque Terre (where the terrain is flatter) is a series of tourist villages and harbors: Sestri Levante, Chiavari, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure.
WHEN TO GO
The best time is April to October, to avoid July and August, since outside this time many of the hotels and guesthouses are closed. The best months for hiking are May, June, September and first half of October. Is there any chance of rain at the beginning and end of the season.
HOW TO GET THERE
The nearest airports are Genoa and Pisa. Pisa (in Tuscany) is about 30 Kms from Cinque Terre and has many connections to European cities, including low-cost flights.
Cinque Terre to Rome are four and a half hours, both the coast and via Pisa and Florence. The train arrives at 7:35 Monterosso noon Ostiense station, the 9am (via Florence) arrive in Termini at 13.30.
