Riga is the capital of Latvia, with 747.200 inhabitants. Thanks to its geographical location on the Baltic Sea (where East and West meets), Riga has been an essential centre of trade, finance and culture for centuries.

This city with unique appearance and rich traditions is experiencing a new Renaissance - many large-scale renovation projects on old buildings are making of it one of the most attractive cities in Europe.

Riga's historical centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly remarkable for its extensive Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) architecture, which UNESCO considers to be incomparable anywhere in the world.

ORIENTATION

Riga is located on a sandy plain close to the mouth of the river Daugava, close to the Gulf of Riga at the Baltic Sea.

Riga's old town still has a medieval aspect. Along its narrow, cobbled streets are medieval churches and guild halls, a renaissance Parliament building, and the National Opera House. Riga Castle, which dates from the 14th century, houses three museums. Alberta and Elizabetes streets are the best place to see the creations of Art Nouveau architect Eisenstein, famous for his splendid style. Other Art Nouveau buildings can be seen in the area surrounding the Freedom Monument.

If you walk around the old town there are lots of beautiful and historical buildings to see including the House of the Black Cats, the Big Guild, and the Little Guild.

BEST TIME TO GO

The climate of Riga is humid continental. The coldest months are January and February, when the average temperature is -5º C. Due to the proximity of the sea autumn rains and fogs are frequent. The summers in Riga are warm and humid with the average temperature of 18º C.

Spring and summer weather in Riga is ideal for open air cafes, relaxed sightseeing and walks along the canal.

In winter the weather is freezing, however it can be magically special and atmospheric, with picturesque snowy streets, cultural events and cosy warm restaurants and bars.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Riga International Airport (Lidosta) is located 13 kilometres from the city centre.

Bus no.22 to Riga central station leaves every 20 minutes and takes around 30 minutes.

There is also a shuttle bus which connects the airport with many hotels. The running times are a bit longer. See www.airbaltic.com for more information.

A taxi takes 10-20 minutes from the airport to the centre.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Riga's old town is best explored on foot, especially because cars are not allowed there.

Riga has a good tram system around the old city, as well as bus, trolleybus and taxi bus routes running daily from 5:30 up to 23:30. During nighttimes several tram and trolleybus run only once an hour.

There are 52 bus routes, 11 tram routes and 20 trolleybus routes in Riga.
