Mdina is the old capital of Malta. Mdina is a medieval walled town positioned on a hill in the centre of the island. Punic vestiges uncovered beyond the city´s walls suggest the importance of the general region to Malta´s Phoenician settlers.
Mdina is commonly called the "Silent City" by its inhabitants. The town is still limited within its walls, and has a population of less than three hundred, but it is nearby the village of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11.000.
Mdina, also known as "Citta Notabile" has imposing palaces lining its narrow, shady streets and is one of Europe´s finest examples of an antique walled city, surprising in its blend of medieval and Baroque architecture.
REASONS TO GO
St. Paul's Cathedral and the Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum.
Walking along its narrow and silent streets.
The dazzling view over the island.
ORIENTATION
Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island of Malta. The town itself is a delight to wander around, many of the alleys really give the sense that nothing has changed here for more than a millennium since the Arabs were here. The main attractions are the cathedral, the cathedral museum, and the views.
BEST TIME TO GO
Malta has cold rainy winters and hot dry summers.
The best time to visit is in spring or early autumn, as the weather will be pleasant and the town won´t be so overfull with tourists like in July and August.
HOW TO GET THERE
Malta International Airport is located between the small towns of Luqa and Gudja, 10 kms from Valletta. Airmalta operates many flights from many European cities to Malta.
Bus number 8 takes you from the airport to Valetta.
To get to Mdina you can take the buses number 80, 81, 83 or 84 from Valletta. The journey takes around 30 minutes.
Alternatively route 65 from Sliema or St. Julians will bring you here too. Bus stop is just outside the city walls.
Taxi directly from the airport to Mdina takes around 30 minutes and costs approximately 20 Euros.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Only inhabitants are authorized to take cars within the city walls. Any way, most streets are too narrow and it takes less than 10 minutes to walk from one end of the town to the other.
Walk around and take random turns in the puzzling alleys. The place is so small that is impossible for you to get lost for more than 2 minutes. The Discover Mdina self guided audio tour is worth taking, especially for individual visitors, as it offers a lot of information about many buildings and descriptions of this unique city, which otherwise remain unknown for the visitor. The tour can be taken from the Vilhena Palace just inside the old city's main gate.
