The Nazareth is a lively and attractive beach and tourist village, with a stunning natural beauty. Being located on the coast Portuguese center, 100 km from Lisbon and 230 km from Porto . Easily accessible, mild climate , friendly people , has all the conditions for a relaxing holidays by the sea and the surrounding nature, taking advantage of the excelent sea conditions for surfing , bodyboard and paddle .

Nazaré Beach is of relatively recent origin, because  in the seventeenth century the sea still  came crashing into the foothills of the Pederneira covering the entire area now occupied by the beach and houses . Fast occurring geological transformations caused the retreat of the sea and the silting up of the area , leaving bare the beautiful inlet .

The first references of fishing in Nazaré date from 1643, however, only at the start  of 1800 the populaçãp began to lay on the sand. The fishermen lived mainly in the higher parts - Sitio and Pederneira  - since the constant attacks of Algerian and Dutch pirates made ​​the unsafe beach.  

Pederneira it´s Nazare's  oldest historical center , was fishing ground since the XII century , important seaport of Coutos Alcobaça , was active shipyard during the golden age of the Portuguese discoveries ( fifteenth and sixteenth centuries ) and received a  "Foral Charter" from the king D. Manuel I in 1514. The very Vasco da Gama ( discoverer of the sea route to India in 1492 ) was in this port in 1497 asking protection  to "Sra. da Nazaré" for their risky mission.

The Nazareth became known and sought after in the mid- nineteenth century for its natural beauty as well as its unusual typical culture. 

 

Fishing, fish processing and the sale was over almost the entire twentieth century , the main activities of the population. The hardness and dangerous sea life have led many fishermen to seek a better life elsewhere. The construction of the Fishing and Recreational Port in early 80s, came change and improve the lives of fishermen , starting a new phase in the village quotidian.

The Nazareth council has three parishes: Nazareth , Valado dos Frades and Famalicão . It has an area of 83.5 square kilometers , about 15,000 inhabitants and one of the most famous beaches of the Portuguese coast.

Today, despite the fishing and agricultural activities remain in the county , tourism has been monopolizing most of the human resources of the municipality.

Why Go?

It is a village of natural beauty , historical and typical unusual. It has an  excellent beach and waterfront. Mild climate . Hospitable people. Excellent gastronomy . Several monuments and handicrafts. Various events : parties, religious festivals and sporting activities. In short there is a little something for all tastes, is also very close to other locations in Portugal worthy of visit and an  extremely beautiful coast. At least but not last: it´s the New Spot of Big Waves!!

How to get there:  The county of Nazareth is crossed by the A8  (Lisbon- Leiria) , served by Trench node of the Valado dos Frades , five 

kilometers from the district council headquarters ; and is located within walking distance of the A1 (node ​​Leiria) and A15 , which links the A8 to the interior of the country. For those who prefer public transport , you can reach Nazareth by bus ( the station is located in the center of the village ) From Lisbon. Take the Express Bus Network bus station at Av . Duque de Avila ( nearest metro Saldanha ) . About 1.5 hours to the central bus station. Prices are variable, one way out arrounds eleven euros,  you can consult www.rede-expressos.pt, and see the prices and shecules or buy it online, you can choice in english or french. 

By train: Trains run to Western Line line Oriente Station in Lisbon. You have to change and accept many stops along the way . Arrival will be in Valado station of Friars / Nazaré / Alcobaça, about 5 km. the center of Nazareth. From there, there is a local bus goes Nazareth and - usually - it would be possible to get a taxi from the station (usually with a fixed rate), you can consult www.cp.pt/passageiros/en/ and see prices and schedules or buy it online!

When go There?

All the time is good to visit Nazareth. But the great attractions , festivals , nightlife and beach is obviously from May to September. Those looking for a family holidays and go to the beach and all the entertainment that exist for family and children : June to August. Those looking for surfing ,body board and paddle : from September. Big waves : November to February . But any time you can visit the monuments and taste the typical food . The month of August is the peak of Tourism with thousands of young people and families looking for all the attractions that the Nazareth offers especially for tourists !
