The Archipelago of Azores is located in the Atlantic Ocean and is an Autonomous region of Portugal. The archipelago is constituted of nine volcanic islands, and is situated in the northern Atlantic, about 1.500 km (950 mi) from the western border of the Iberian Peninsula and about 3.900 km (2.400 mi) from North America.

The Azorean landscape is made of contrasts: Calm plains and high mountains divided by deep valleys, coastline with sheltered bays and steep cliffs. The abundant islets in the archipelago add beauty to this scenery and offer a natural safe haven for bird colonies.

REASONS TO GO

Bird and whale watching, fishing and diving

Magnificent landscapes, unique culture and hospitality

The Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the Horta Harbour, the Faial Caldera and Capelinhos volcano, and the Pico Landscape

ORIENTATION

The Azorean archipelago, the most isolated group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean is divided in three distinct groups:

The Occidental Group: Flores and Corvo;

The Central Group: Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial;

The Oriental Group: San Miguel, Santa Maria and Formigas.

BEST TIME TO GO

The Azores have a mild sea climate, so the annual humidity value, rain and temperatures do not vary a lot.

The average temperature is 17.5º C and the relative humidity is between 75% and 80% high, throughout the year.

From spring, the islands are covered with blossoming flowers, turning in an exotic coloured patchwork. From April to September is probably the best time to visit the islands, avoiding the rainy season. Summer is the best time for whale watching.

HOW TO GET THERE

The nine Azores Islands are served by SATA airlines. International flights arrive at Ponta Delgada on the Azores largest island - São Miguel. During the high season, SATA flies to the Azores from Boston, Oakland, Porto, Lisbon, Faro, Frankfurt, Paris, Dublin, London, Amsterdam and the Canary Islands.

If you are coming to the Azores from Lisbon, you can get direct flights to Horta, Terceira and Santa Maria as well as to Ponta Delgada.

TRAVELLING AROUND

SATA has many connections within the Azorean islands. During the high season there are many flights between the islands.

To travel between the islands and even between towns, the boats are also a great choice. Almost every town is on the shore and most have ports. On Sao Miguel, in the largest town Ponta Delgada, there is a large and modern marina.

The best way to move inside an island is definitely by car. You can rent a car at the airports or in the principal towns.

There are many walking paths on the islands as walking is one of the attractions enjoyed by tourists in the Azores.
