Santiago de Compostela began as a passing place along a Roman road, but the discovery of the tomb of St. James the beginning of the nineteenth century gave rise to a place of worship within the confines of a peninsula at that time dominated by the Muslim invasion. Since then throughout Europe began to walk towards Santiago, the holy city of Christianity where everyone expected to get the full grace of absolution.

By Plane
The Santiago de Compostela Airport is about 10 kms from the city center. To get to the airport take the national road N-634, which connects Santiago with the N-547 towards Lugo. The deviation is seven miles east of the city. Also available via the A-54 motorway linking the ring of Santiago with the N-547.

Train
Long course: two daily direct trains, connecting to Madrid (Talgo and Express). A train to San Sebastian and Hendaye. Through a single transfer, is accessed daily to Barcelona, Bilbao, Portugal and Paris, and almost all major national destinations.
Regional: trains run every hour to major destinations in Galicia, A Coruña, Vilagarcía Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo - for dial-Portugal. There are also direct connection with continuous Ourense
Transcantábrico: panoramic train that runs north and northwest of Spain, the 'Green Spain' from S. Sebastian, in País Vasco, to Santiago de Compostela.
