The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM) is one of the most important cultural institutions in Brazil.
Opened in 1948 on the initiative of a group of entrepreneurs is a private nonprofit organization, the result of cultural and economic context in which we observed the diversification of cultural facilities in this country, the acquisition of a valuable artistic heritage and assimilation of modern artistic movements .
Scene of several events of great importance in the Brazilian artistic avant-garde, the museum has amassed throughout its history a collection of modern art highly representative - most, however, lost in the tragic fire of 1978. Preserve today about 11 000 objects, mostly from the Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, deposited on loan at the museum in 1993.
