Plaka and the Flea Market, Omonia Square
Plaka is the historic heart of Athens, located to the north of the Acropolis. Next to Plaka are the districts of Monastiraki and Thissio, popular with tourists and Athenians alike. Its complex street layout in many cases follows the ancient street plan.
Plaka is a charming historic district at the foot of the Acropolis, with its restored 19th century neoclassical homes, pedestrianized streets, shops, restaurants, cafes, tavernas and souvenir stores.
The flea market takes place at Monastiraki and Avissinias Square, with antique furniture, porcelain and many other interesting things for sale.
Plaka today is still the same as in late 19th and early 20th century and offers a unique opportunity of visiting an area of Athens that is characterized by singular beauty and seems to belong in different times.
