Mercado do Bolhão (Bolhão Market)

libre

The Bolhão Market is one of the most emblematic markets in the city. The name derives from the soil characteristics and a fountain existence in the vicinity called "Bolhão Fountain”.

The market dates back to 1839, when the City Council decided to concentrate in this point all the markets existing in the city. The current building was opened in 1914, replacing the previous market in the place.

The construction is characterized by its monumentality, typical of neoclassical architecture.

There are four main entrances on different levels. Developed around a fountain with four taps, the market has two floors connected by several staircases, and a large central courtyard divided into two exterior spaces through a covered gallery, built in the 1940s.

The Bolhão market is focused on fresh products, such as fish, meat, vegetables, fruits and flowers.

Today, the building is severely degraded, having been proposed for rehabilitation.
