Founded in 1982, the Deutsches Technikmuseum stands in a long tradition of scientific and technical collections. Many of these had their home in Berlin for more than 120 years, and some of these collections have been taken over by the Deutsches Technikmuseum.

The museum's main emphasis is on rail transport, but it also features exhibits of various sorts of industrial technology. Recently, it has opened both maritime and aviation exhibition halls. The museum also contains a science center called Spectrum.
