The Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) is a 14th-century Protestant church. One of the oldest churches in Berlin, it houses a large medieval fresco of "The Dance of Death" inspired by the plague of 1486 in the vestibule leads to a relatively plain interior enlivened by elaborate epitaphs and a baroque alabaster pulpit by Andreas Schl�ter (1703).

The architecture of the building is now largely composed of comparatively modern restoration work which took place in the late 19th century and in the post-war period.

The church was originally a Roman Catholic church, but has been a Lutheran Protestant church since the Protestant Reformation.

The Alte National Galerie (Old National Gallery) houses one of the most important collections of 19th century painting in Germany and includes masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich, Adolph Menzel Edouard Manet Claude Monet, not to mention Auguste Renoir and Auguste Rodin. Amongst the most important highlights are K D Friedrichs “Der M�nch am Meer” (from 1810) Arnold Br�cklin’s “Die Toteninsel (1883), Adolph Menzel’s “Flotenkonzert Friedrich des Gro�en in Sanssouci” (1852) and Edouard Manet’s “Im Wintergarten” (1979).
The collection was first housed in the buildings of the Akademie der K�nste. The current building, shaped like a Roman temple with an appended apse was planned by Friedrich August St�ler in 1865, following a sketch by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, and its construction between 1869 and 1876 was overseen by Heinrich Strack. The building was heavily damaged in World War II air raids. It was partly reopened in 1949, but reconstruction continued until 1969. Between 1998 and 2001, the museum was renovated thoroughly. Some extra halls were added on the uppermost floor and now contain the Romantic works. The collection contains works from Classicism and Romanticism (by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and Karl Blechen), of the Biedermeier, the French Impressionism (�douard Manet, Claude Monet) and early modern works (Adolph von Menzel, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth). Among the most important exhibits are Friedrich's M�nch am Meer, Menzel's Eisenwalzwerk and sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow's Prinzessinnengruppe, a double statue of princesses Louise and Friederike of Prussia.

There are works here from the early Middle Ages to the late 18th century, including serious masterpieces like Donatello’s early Renaissance Pazzi Madonna, Giovanni Pisano’s Man of Sorrows relief and the portrait busts of Desiderio da Settignano. From the Italians cruise on over to the Germans, perhaps to compare the emotiveness of Tilman Riemenschneider’s carvings to those by his contemporaries Hans Multscher or Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden.
Before breaking for coffee at the museum’s elegant cafe, pop down to the Museum of Byzantine Art, which takes up just a few rooms off the grand domed foyer. Roman sarcophagi, ivory carvings and mosaic icons are among the items revealing the level of artistry in the early days of Christianity. Coin collectors should also get a kick out of the Numismatic Collection on the 2nd floor, where the oldest farthing is from the 7th century BC. Kids, meanwhile, can learn how to make mosaics in the interactive Kindergalerie (Children’s Gallery) in the basement.

Small and delightfully interactive, this is where you can turn the ignition key of an authentic Trabant car or learn how to dance the Lipsi, the GDR’s answer to rock ‘n’ roll. A must for Good Bye Lenin! fans. Lest you get the impression that life in the GDR was cute and wholesome, though, you might want to follow up a visit here with a trip out to the Gedenkst�tte Hohensch�nhausen (Stasi Prison).

The Filmmuseum Berlin (Berlin Film Museum) gives a chronological tour – with exhibitions and displays – of the history of German cinema. One of the main exhibitions focuses on the link between the Berlin and Hollywood film industries. The extensive collection within the museum includes thousands of screenplays, film posters and film programmes, as well as a million stills of scenes, portraits and productions. This church was the first Neo-Gothic church built in Berlin, Germany.

The building is currently part of the Berlin State Museums' ensemble, holding the Berlin National Gallery's collection of nineteenth-century German sculpture, showing works of Johann Gottfried Schadow, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Christian Daniel Rauch among others. In the upper floor a huge exhibition of work and life of Karl Friedrich Schinkel is shown.

At the centre of the exhibition is the original plaster model for Johann Gottfried Schadow's marble sculpture of the Prussian princesses. The area of the Classical sculptural ideal is represented by Emil Wolff's "Badende" and Heinrich K�mmel's "Fischerknabe". Theodor Kalide's "Bacchantin auf dem Panther" - a war-damaged torso, the revolutionary modernity of which can be recognised even in this fragmentary form - already exceeds the boundaries of Classicism. Busts of significant personages from the Goethe period complement the sculpture exhibition: Immanuel Kant, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt and other characters from this significant period in German intellectual history are present.

In the gallery of the church, the Nationalgalerie (National Gallery) has put on display a documentary exhibition on the life and work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. So, at the same time, the building receives recognition: with the Friedrichswerder Church Schinkel realised a central work of German neo-Gothic.

The Gemaldegalerie (Picture Gallery) houses a significant collection of more than two thousand European paintings from the 13th-18th centuries.

There are masterpieces from all eras, including works by artists such as Bruegel, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Rubens. The Neue Wache memorial has been the main memorial site for the victims of war and tyranny since 1993.

After 1960, the restored building in East Berlin served as a "memorial to the victims of fas-cism and militarism" which housed an eternal flame. In 1969, the remains of an unknown soldier and an unknown concentration camp prisoner were buried there, surrounded by earth taken from the battlefields of World War II and from concentration camps. Until 1990, on every Wednesday an honour guard marched in front of this memorial.

After German reunification, the Neue Wache became the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny." In the centre of the memorial space there stands the large sculpture "Mother with her Dead Son" by K�the Kollwitz.

The massive Pergamon Museum houses several departments, the most popular of which is probably the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, housed in the north and east wings of the museum.

Of special interest is the Pergamon Altar – an ancient Greek temple dating from 180-160BC – which is so huge that it has a room all to itself. The Near East Museum, in the south wing, contains one of the largest collections anywhere of antiquities from ancient Babylonia, Persia and Assyria.

The museum's upper level is devoted to the Museum of Islamic Art, containing many miniatures, carpets and woodcarvings.
Today, it accommodates three separate museums: the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities), occupying the architectural halls and the sculpture wing, the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East) and the Museum f�r Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art). 

The Pergamon Museum houses some of the oldest reconstructed monumental buildings in the world. The highlight of the museum is the Pergamon Alta (built in second Century BC), which was transported and rebuilt from the original excavation site.

Staggered renovation work, begun in 2008, is currently under way as part of the Museum Island Master Plan, fulfilling plans devised by the architectural offices of Oswald Mathias Ungers. A total closure of the building will be avoided.

The converted bunker stands like a gloomy block on the corner of Reinhardtstrasse and Albrechtstrasse, not far from the Deutsches Theater in Berlin’s Mitte district. Inside, it hides an incredible treasure trove of contemporary art – sculpture, spatial installations, light and performance-based work of international standing.During the tour you’ll also pick up fascinating nuggets about the war-scarred shelter that preserves the original fittings, pipes, steel doors and vents. Built for 2000 people, its dank rooms crammed in twice as many during the heaviest air raids towards the end of the war. Afterwards, the Soviets briefly used it as a POW prison before it assumed a more benign role as a fruit and vegetable storeroom in GDR times, which spawned the nickname ‘Banana Bunker.’ In the 1990s, the claustrophobic warren saw some of Berlin’s naughtiest techno raves and fetish parties. Boros finally snapped it up in 2003.
