This is the oldest church in Porto. According to tradition a monastery was founded here in the 6th century. Two limestone capitals dating from the Reconquering of Iberia remain from the original building. The church was greatly altered in 1087 but the blind arches of the chancel were retained. The Church was also substantially remodelled from the end of the 12th century onwards.
