Barranco del Infierno, Tenerife Sur Barranco del Infierno is a deep gorge with latelar slopes, created by water erosion over a seven million years period. The trail starts at a 350 meters altitude, in the town of Adeje, next to the old mill. The barranco narrows as we walk through it and its vertical walls seem to close over the visitor's head. The first part of the trail, in the most low and dry areas, passes through an hillside populated by tabaibas and cardoons. Higher, when the soil gets damper, willows lay on barranco's riverbed. Species as dragos and sabinas cover the unaccessible slopes, hanging on rocks as expert tightrope walkers, while pinetrees start to appear at distance. Basílica de Nuestra Seí±ora de la Candelaria, Tenerife East for free At the end of the 14th century, some one hundred years before the conquest of Tenerife, a Gothic carving of the Virgin of Candelaria appeared on the coasts of the Güí­mar Valley. The Guanches worshipped this statue and gave it the name of Chaxiraxi. From 1526, this image remained in the sanctuary that the second governor of Tenerife, Pedro Fernández de Lugo, ordered to be built. However, this primitive statue disappeared during a torrential rainstorm in 1826. The current statue is the work of Fernando Estévez from Tenerife, completed in 1827. The basilica is the work of architect Enrique Marrero Regalado. It was built in 1959 thanks to the initiative of the Bishop of Tenerife, Domingo Pérez Cáceres, who was born in Güí­mar. It is built in a regional style, with three naves, a roof that imitates the Mudejar style and crowned with a 25-metre high dome. The central tower stands over 45 metres high and includes a typical Canarian balcony. The main chapel contains the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, which Pope Clement VIII proclaimed the patron saint of the Canarian Archipelago in 1599. This title was ratified in 1867 by Pope Pius IX. Inside there are murals by José Aguiar and works by the painter Martí­n González. Other works include the Christ of Reconciliation, a baroque monstrance (the vessel used by the Roman Catholic Church to display the Eucharist, during Adoration) made in the 18th century, and a baptism font of great historical value from the 16th century. Camel Park, Tenerife Sur The Canary Islands, a few miles from the West African coast of Western Sahara, have, in some parts, a climate and vegetation suitable for life camel. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the southern part of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are desert climate zones, in which only the animal and the ass have been used without major adjustment problems. Due to these reasons of proximity and, shortly after the conquest of the islands by the Spanish began to arrive the first camels to the eastern islands, later extended throughout much of the islands. Its main use has been tilling the land and carrying loads and people, until a few years ago when the introduction of mechanical means has made this animal obsolete . Only in recent years, thanks to tourism, this animal has found once again a new way of life and appear in the landscape of the Canary Islands. Camel Park was the first camel breeding center in Tenerife. They started operations in 1988 with 15 camels on a banana farm located in Guaza and by 1993 they had managed to gather more than 60 animals. Cueva del Viento, Tenerife North The Cueva del Viento (Cave of the Wind) is a volcanic cavity located in the district of Icod de los Vinos bearing the same name. Formed 27,000 years ago in basaltic lavas from the Pico Viejo volcano during its first eruptive phase, it is located in the foothills of Mount Teide. This tube is the fourth longest in the world (18 kilometres) and is a true labyrinthine network of underground passages, with many unexplored ramifications, which will permit the future expansion of its length as exploration continues. Apart from its size, the Cueva del Viento is noted for its unique geomorphology. Its network of galleries consists of three superimposed levels, a phenomenon that has not been noted anywhere else in the world. Its name is due to the significant flows of air that occur in its interior. Biologically the greatest relevance of this tube lies in its subterranean fauna which provides a constant source of new findings. The cave has a total of 190 known species. Of these, forty-eight are troglobites, animals that can live only in the subsurface environment. Among these species doomed to live in the dark, fifteen are new to science such as the eyeless cockroach Loboptera subterránea or the ground beetles or carabids Wolltinerfia martini and Woltinerfia tenerifae. From a geomorphological perspective, the Cueva del Viento features a wide variety of structures such as lava stalactites, lava cascades, side terraces and lava lakes among others, as well as exogenous concretions of different composition (calcium carbonate, cristobalite, and other silica compounds). El Drago Milenario, Tenerife NorthWest for free Legends say that when dragons die they become dragon trees, and it is obvious why this living fossil is one of the symbols of the Canary Islands, and maybe even the greatest treasure of Canarian flora. When one looks at its peculiar shape, it is also not surprising that the tree was considered a divine tree by the early inhabitants of the islands. Until recently, Dracaena draco was considered to be native to Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde; however, it has now also been found in wild populations in Morocco. The islands are home to a number of impressive dragon trees. The great explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was greatly impressed when in the Franchy Gardens he saw before him a giant 25-metre high dragon tree with a 23-metre circumference, although there has been disagreement regarding these measurements. This tree, unfortunately, disappeared following strong winds in 1867. Today, the largest and most famous dragon tree, which has a diameter of 20 metres at the base and is 17 metres high, stands majestically in Icod de Los Vinos (Tenerife). It weighs approximately 150 tonnes not including the roots. There has been much debate over the age of the tree, and some say it may be over 5000 years old; however, recent estimates suggest that the tree is no more than 800 to 1000 years old. Ocean Swimming, All Areas for free First things first, you can swim in the sea at any time of the year in Tenerife. However, there are a few things that you need to know about swimming in the waters around Tenerife before taking the plunge. Sea temperatures around Tenerife’s coastline vary very little between summer and winter, staying around 19/22C. It’s a pleasant temperature for swimming in… as long as the sun is shining. Whilst sea temperatures change little throughout the year, the temperature above water does. It’s one thing diving into refreshing waters when thermometers are steaming at 30+ in summer, but diving into the same water when it’s winter and 21C on the beach is more likely to result in a high-pitched yelp. When you head to the sea on a sunny January day, the water feels welcoming enough. But if it clouds over and the sun’s warmth is stolen, it can be a very different and goose pimply picture. The biggest obstacle to swimming in the sea in Tenerife isn’t the temperature, it’s the waves. For anyone staying in the southern resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de la Américas and Costa Adeje waves are less of a problem. Resort beaches tend to be man-made with protective breakwaters or even near a harbour which keeps the waves at bay most of the time. Playa Las Teresitas outside of Santa Cruz is the same and perfect for those who like the sea to be like a lagoon. Head north where beaches are more rugged, dramatic and exposed to the Atlantic and it’s a very different picture. La Orotava’s beaches at Playa Bollullo are some of the most attractive on Tenerife, but swimming there is only recommended if you’re as at home in the sea as the average mermaid. At Puerto de la Cruz, the ferocity of the Atlantic rollers can make a dip in the sea a bit of a lottery. Even if it’s a gloriously sunny day, the lifeguards could be flying a green flag (strip off and dive in), a yellow (dive in but don’t stray too far) or a red (no swimming even if you’re a dolphin). The worst time for lively waves is during the change of seasons. In October/November and March/April there can be some pretty spectacular displays on Tenerife’s beaches. If you venture onto the beaches without breakwaters during this period, keep an eye on the waves crashing on the sand; more than once we’ve had to leg it up the beach to escape wayward waves that threatened to drag our towels and clothes back into the deep blue. ompared to some places, sea-life around Tenerife is friendly but occasionally you have to be aware of potential hazards. The east and west coasts offer some very good diving, specifically from Los Gigantes. One of the dives is Sting Ray City where you to descend to 18 metres and feed the rays with fish heads etc. The size of the rays can be up to 4 metres (12 feet) - a great experience. Near Masca, which is for advanced divers, at 47 metres down there is a large cave with black corals, white bearded antheas, large morays and very good light and visibility. There is a diving site at Playa de las Americas/Los Cristianos. El Meridian is an old yacht measuring approx. 56 feet. It was deliberately sunk in the autumn of 2005 as a dive site to a depth of 30 meters on a sandy sea bed next to a rocky reef. Then there is the Cueva de Palm Mar. This is a 40 metre dive for advanced divers with good visibility. Descending to 16 meters you swim off the edge of a cliff down to a cave entrance at 30 metres. There are Mediterranean moray, brown moray and the tiger moray. The cave itself is a Tenerife mystery as nobody knows exactly how long the interior tunnel actually is or where it leads. Several divers have died exploring this cave system and there is a memorial cross outside the cave. The deepest part of this dive is at 40 meters. Further along the coast to Santa Cruz de Tenerife there is some good diving. One of the wrecks is the The Condesito which lies 3km from Las Galletas harbour. The Condesito sits in a neat little under water gully. The hull, cabin and engine room are still intact and teeming with fish including Trumpet Fish, Boxfish, Moray Eels, Indigo Damsel Fish, Octopus and slate blue Sting Rays.
