Since its foundation in Salzburg in 1983, the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has specialized in European and North American contemporary art. Today the gallery's headquarters are housed in the magnificient Villa Kast on Salzburg's Mirabellplatz.

The Salzburger Marionettentheater (Theatre of Marionettes) is a traditional institution that provided inspiration for the musical "The Sound of Music". When the movie was shot in Salzburg, the lonely shepherd song was recorded with the appearance of Marionettes - the ultimate base for the international fame of the marionettes. Within Salzburg, a local marionette tradition can be tracked back much further in time.

The Marionettentheather presents operas by various composers, including of course Mozart's Magic Flute, as well as the Salzburg classic The Sound of Music, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet and Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Children for sure will like  Peter and the Wolf or The Toy Shop. For children and those with little time to spare, we recommend our one-hour afternoon programme.

Schloss Hellbrunn was built early in the 17th century by Santino Solari as the prince-archbishops pleasure palace. The castle has some really fascinating rooms, including an octagonal music room and a banquet hall with a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. When visiting the gardens, you will not believe the the realm of fantasy that the grand Salzburg archbishops indulged in.

The schloss is also famous for its "watergames" in the grounds, which are a popular tourist attraction in the summer months. These games were conceived by Markus Sittikus, a man with a keen sense of humour, as a series of practical jokes to be performed on guests.
