Garachico is today one of the most important historical centers of the Canaries.
The town itself nestles below a 500m+ (1500 ft) cliff, one of the least spoilt coastal area of Tenerife. There is no beach worth mentioning; the coastline is essentially volcanic debris, but this does give the town its charm and a reason to visit it.
The rich legacy of past historical and artistic heritage and the special care has been taken in their preservation, earned him the award in 1980, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. Respect for that legacy has enabled Garachico to present today a rich display of art in the Canaries, particularly of urbanism and traditional architecture of the Archipelago.
