Chiang Mai is the capital of the north of Thailand, situated at the intersection of Northern and Southeast Asia; it is an active transport centre.
The city is modern with but has an ancient atmosphere. Its lifestyle and feeling, especially in the old quarter, with its traditional wooden houses and tranquil garden spaces, are very far away from the chaotic Bangkok.
REASONS TO VISIT
Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chiang Man and Wat Chedi Luang Temples.
The Chiang Mai Flower Festival in February.
The Loi Krathong Festival in November.
ORIENTATION
Chiang Mai is surrounded by a giant ring road, the Superhighway. Within this road, the city is split into two main parts: the old town and the last remains of the original city walls, with most of the city's traditional wats (temples).
Between the old town and the Ping River to the east is to be found the new town, where are most of the city shops, business and banks. Most hotels and restaurants are to be found between the two districts, close to Tha Pae Gate.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Chiang Mai is between October and April. From June to September the weather gets too hot and humid.
HOW TO GET THERE
Chiang Mai's international airport is 3km (2 miles) southwest of the city centre.
To get to the city centre, catch bus 4 or 10 to Tha Pae Gate. You can also take a taxi from outside the arrivals hall.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The town centre is quite compact and easy to visit walking. To move further out of the city centre the best thing is to take a taxi or a tuk-tuk.
