Ambergris is the largest of the islets in Belize, in the northernmost part of the country. Close to the Belize Barrier Reef, the island is surrounded by outstanding diving and snorkelling sites.
The largest town on Ambergris Caye is San Pedro, with around 9.000 inhabitants and celebrated for its tranquil lifestyle. In the town and along the beaches there is a miscellaneous blend of restaurants and bars, shops and boutique hotels.

ORIENTATION
The peaceful town of San Pedro is located on the southernmost tip of the island. On the northern and southern shores of Ambergris there are many luxury resorts.
The best diving spots are the Great Blue Hole, the Turneffe Islands, the Shark Ray Alley, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the Mexico Rocks and the Lighthouse Reef.
BEST TIME TO GO
The warm temperatures on the island are rather constant all through the year.
The dry season goes from February to June and the wet season goes from July to January, when there will be more rain and mosquitoes. Tropical storms are more regular during late summer and fall. Spring months are most likely to be the best time to visit.
HOW TO GET THERE
By plane
You can take a 20 minutes flight from Belize City, in the mainland, to Ambergris, or you can fly to from the Phillip Goldson International Airport. There is a small airfield near the centre of the island and next to San Pedro town.
By boat
There are several daily water taxi connections between Belize City and the centre of San Pedro.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The easiest way to move around Ambergris Caye is on foot. It is also possible to rent golf carts, which are the dominant form of transportation, next to bicycles.
