The hilly southwest of the country has two alpine ranges Rila and Pirin. On the Rila range is the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula, Musala, at 2.925 metres (9,596 ft).
This mountainous country and plains lays to the north along the Danube and along the Black Sea coast to the southeast.
