Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. The city and metropolitan area have around 1.4 million inhabitants. Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe, though it is still a destination for tourists to discover.
The city was founded 3000 years ago by a tribe called Serdi. Nowadays, the centre has the typical Stalinist architecture. The city is gradually becoming a cosmopolitan European country, filled with museums, art galleries, restaurants, hotels, green parks and casinos.

ORIENTATION
Sofia is located in the west of the country, by the Vitosha Mountain, in the Sofia Valley. In central downtown district you will be able to find the main highlights of Sofia´s long history. Its architecture ranges from Roman, Byzantine, 20th century and neo-classical Stalinist.
Near the Alexander Nevski Church is the Oborishte district, a pleasant residential and commercial area, with small boutiques, galleries and restaurants. If you want to get away from the bright lights of the city then leave to the fresh mountain air in the Boyana district, right in the base of Vitosha Mountain.
BEST TIME TO GO
Best time to visit the city, is between April and September. Sofia has very cold winters and very hot summers.
HOW TO GET THERE
Sofia International airport (www.sofia-airoport.bg) is 10km away from the city centre. From terminal 1 you can pickup the bus nr.84 and from terminal 2, the bus nr. 284. They will transport you to the city centre in 20 minutes. A single ticket costs 1Lev including luggage. Taxi costs around 10 Lev.
International trains offer a great number of routes to Sofia, arriving from the most varied European cities.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The best way to visit Sofia is probably renting a car. However, Sofia has a good network of public, connecting all the important points. Taxi is also a good option.
