Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and also its largest city with around 1 million inhabitants. The city has a fascinating medieval 'old city' with an Italian influenced architecture, but also evocative of Vienna, Budapest, Prague and other Central-European capitals.

ORIENTATION
Zagreb is positioned between the Medvednica Mountain and the banks of the Sava River at an altitude of about 122 m (400 ft) above sea level.
Zagreb is divided in the Upper Town and the Lower Town. In the Upper Town is located the medieval centre developed as two separate (and often warring) towns Kaptol and Gradec. Next to this, the city extended south of today's Jelacic Square to the railway station and the Sava River.

The climate of Zagreb is mostly continental. Zagreb has four separate seasons with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in winter is 1º C in summer is 20º C.
HOW TO GET THERE
Zagreb Airport is the most important Croatian international airport, 20 km from the city. There is a bus connection between the airport and the bus station in Zagreb.
Zagreb is also a railway intersection, having direct services to the most important European cities as well as domestic services to all major towns (except Dubrovnik). During all year, there is also an overnight train travelling between Zagreb and Split.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Zagreb´s public transports are organized in such a way that the interior parts of the city are mainly covered by trams and suburbs are connected with buses.
In the historic part of the city, the funicular is a tourist attraction you shouldn´t miss. It is also possible to buy the Zagreb Card. It offers travels on public transport in Zagreb, discounts at mostly all of the city´s museums, reduced prices at many restaurants, shops, etc. It costs 90 kuna (approx. 12 euro) and is valid for 72 hours.
