A beautiful city, with friendly people and lively nightlife.
The Night of the Arts, near the end of August
ORIENTATION
Helsinki is a very modern and technologically advanced city, but still maintains the contact to its ancient history and traditions.
It is a city full of beautiful and lively squares, markets, open air events, parks, restaurants and cafés, and very good museums.
HOW TO GET THERE
The Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport is located 20 kilometres to the north of the city. A taxi ride to the city costs €30-40. You can also catch the bus nr.615 (costs €4, every 15 min). It takes around 40 min to the Central Railway Station in the heart of Helsinki.
If you are travelling by car, a good option is to take one of the many ferries which operate from Sweden, Germany, Sweden and Estonia.
BEST TIME TO GO
The summers are short but surprisingly pleasant. Temperatures rise above 20°C, the parks turn green and the city's beaches get crowded. Helsinki has a vibrant cultural and social life, and August is definitely one of the most active and exciting months of the year.
Helsinki is one of the world's northernmost capitals and the long winter, between October and April, is dark and very cold. Winter temperatures average -5°C, but the freezing wind makes it feel even colder and the mercury can push below -30°C on some days.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Helsinki has a very good transports service. A smart option is to buy the Tourist Ticket that allows you travel cheaper and easily.
The Helsinqui Card besides the free transport also includes the free entrance in many museums.
