Dresden is a beautiful city located on the Elbe River, with over 500.000 inhabitants, and capital of the German federal state of Saxony. It isn´t only a cultural central but also an important industrial and governmental focal point, known worldwide for the Bruehl's Terrace and its historic landmarks in the Old Town (Altstadt).

In spite of the enormous damage caused by the Second World War, the Old City part of Dresden has preserved or regained fascinating buildings. The most famous icon of this restoration in the city centre is the Dresden Frauenkirche Church, the splendid baroque dome.

3 REASONS TO GO

The historical centre of Dresden was almost completely destroyed in a terrible bombing during the 2nd World War. It is amazing to watch the way the city has managed to recover its former glory. Some parts are still nowadays under reconstruction.

ORIENTATION

Dresden is divided in two by Elba River. The historical city centre Altstadt, with Zwinger, Frauenkirche Church, Opera, and most of the important museums and luxury hotels are sited on the left banks of the Elbe.

On the right side of the Elbe  Neustadt, you can find baroque street blocks, many restaurants and nightclubs. East from Elba, are located the old suburbs of de Loschwitz, Blasewitz, e Weisser Hirsch.

BEST TIME TO GO

Dresden is the perfect place for long walks, but rain can come up at anytime of the year. From May to October the weather is usually milder, and that´s also the time when more popular events and festivities take place.

HOW TO GET THERE

Dresden-Klotzsche Airport (www.dresden-airport.de) is situated north of the city. You can use the bus (line 77 and 97) and tram line 7 to get to the city centre. Even faster is the connection with local train lines (S-Bahn). Taxi from the city centre to the airport costs between 16 and 18 Euros (from Postplatz) and takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

A good option to travel to Dresden is by train. The city has two big train stations, one on the northern side of the Elbe (Dresden Neustadt), and one on the southern side of the Elbe (Dresden Hauptbahnhof or main train station).

There are numerous daily trains to all the larger German cities (Trains depart from Berlin to this wonderful city every two hours). For international travellers, there are connections to more than 10 major European cities (e.g. Paris, Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest).

TRAVELLING AROUND

In the centre, particularly in the historic part in Old Town (Altstadt), everything is easily reachable by foot. You can also get yourself a Dresden City Card. It costs 21 euro, it´s valid for 48 hours and allows you free transportation. It´s valid for all trams and buses within the whole net of services of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG (DVB AG), on the Elbe ferries in Dresden, and on the local trains of the DB AG (only within the Dresden fare zone). It also gives you free admission or discounts in several museums and exhibitions.
