Basilica da Estrela

for free

The Basilica da Estrela is located in Lisbon, Portugal.
This vast church, surmounted by a dome, stands on top of a hill west of the city, thus becoming one of its landmarks.
The temple has characteristics of late baroque and neoclassical.
The facade is flanked by twin towers and decorated with statues of saints and allegorical figures.
In the second half of the eighteenth century, D. Mary I, daughter of D. Joseph I,vowed to build a church if she had a son to inherit the throne. Her wish was fulfilled and the construction of the temple was started in 1779. Unfortunately, however, the boy, named Joseph, died of smallpox, two years before the completion of construction in 1790.
